“The Galaxy S10 is rumoured to come with an ultrasonic optical fingerprint scanner, which will be faster than the current ones”
The 10th iteration of Samsung’s Galaxy S-series smartphones are going to be special in many ways. The handsets are expected to come with a radically new design, the new OneUI, and a host of improvements on the hardware front. Moreover, the Galaxy S10 has been rumoured to boast of an ultra-sonic in-display fingerprint sensor that is tipped to be faster than the current lot. Stretching on that, a new report has come up which says that Samsung will be outsourcing the optical scanners from vendors such as GIS and O-film.
As pointed out by Digitimes, the two companies are producing ultrasonic in-display fingerprint readers for the Galaxy S10 in partnership with Qualcomm. The duo is expected to ship the readers for the handset in January, preceding the flagship’s unveiling in February and its launch not long after that, according to industry sources. “With Samsung expected to unveil its Galaxy S10 family products at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC) at the end of February 2019, the supply chain the flagship models are expected to begin to fulfil related orders in January.”
The report further revealed that the Taiwanese firm-GIS manufactured ultra-sonic fingerprint readers will have high yield-rate (accuracy), while China’s O-film will have high capacity (life) and lower price. Having said that, Samsung is yet to decide which sensor it’ll prefer for the high-end variants of Galaxy S10, which are rumoured to arrive 6.1-inch and 6.4-inch OLED panels. As for the rumoured entry-level variant of S10, it’ll have a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
It was later added that the two firms – GIS and O-film – are also vying for orders for Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note10 smartphone expected to in the second half of 2019.
