Poco F1 is possibly the best value for money smartphone that you can buy right now. Poco hasn’t left any room for complaint and the smartphone offers flagship performance at a mid-range price point. That said, there are some basic features that are missing on the Poco F1 that helped Xiaomi to reduce the cost of Poco F1.
Poco F1 sold out like hot cakes during the first flash sale. Every Poco F1 user is happy with his or her purchase decision. Well, an Indian blog AndroidPure reported that the Poco F1 can’t stream or playback HD videos. This will be a major problem for users who heavily rely on their smartphones for media consumption. So here’s why Poco F1 can’t stream HD videos, and why the issue can never be resolved.
Poco F1: HD Video Streaming Issue
Major streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, BBC, and Hulu encrypt their content so as to avoid piracy. Widevine is the most popular and widely used DRM(Digital rights management) platform for securely licensing, distributing and protecting playback of encrypted content. In simple words, Widevine helps control the piracy of content from these platforms. Well, Widevine has three basic standards L1, L2, and L3.
The Poco F1 comes with Widevine L3 DRM which is limited to streaming SD(Standard Definition) content only. Consequently, users can’t playback or stream HD(Higher Definition) or 720p and above content.

In order to play HD content, Widevine L1 is necessary. Furthermore, it’s a hardware issue that can’t be solved with an OTA software update or a new patch. Poco will definitely fix the issue by manufacturing devices that support Widevine L1 DRM in the future units. But for those who have purchased the Poco F1, there is no possible fix available to this issue.
We can’t expect POCO to recall the smartphones and then fix the problem, as it will be an expensive and time-consuming process.
Poco F1: HD Content On Other Services

The Poco F1 can easily play FHD content from services like YouTube. The reason why it can do so is that many services like YouTube don’t require DRM. Apart from that, you can even download and playback FHD videos. The hardware is very much capable of playing HD content but the missing component Widevine L1 restricts playing HD content from various streaming services.
