Huawei is the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. The Shenzen based Chinese brand offers promising smartphones with camera performance being the major highlight of Huawei’s flagship devices. You might be surprised to know that Huawei was found guilty for tweaking its smartphone to offer an increased score while running benchmark applications.
Modified Benchmarks: A Major Issue
Modified benchmarks can be considered as a fake representation of a smartphone’s actual performance. Recently it was found that Huawei modified the benchmarks on a majority of smartphones that the company launched in 2018. Huawei did this to boast the powerful performance of Huawei smartphones and impress the customers.
In reality, these phone’s are not as powerful as represented by the benchmark scores.
Huawei did this by running the benchmark application in the foreground and maxing out the processor’s speed and allowing it run at its full potential. Furthermore, every CPU taxing task running in the background was automatically closed. A Huawei smartphone relied on AI for detecting when a benchmarking application was opened.
Once detected the phone entered enhanced performance mode. This mode maxed out the CPU, GPU, and NPU speeds to offer performance gains.
Benchmarks: Elucidated
Benchmarks are a clear representation of a phones performance and hardware capabilities. A benchmark testing application tests the single-core performance, multi-core performance, and GPU performance. The results for these tests are represented in the form of numbers. Two most popular benchmark applications are Antutu benchmark and Geekbench.
Well, a benchmark is only a number and doesn’t represent the actual user experience that the smartphone will provide. It is worth noting that a powerful hardware coupled with a buggy beta software will provide a bad user experience as compared to a weak hardware coupled with well-optimized software. Consequently, it’s not a good idea to judge a smartphone’s performance based on its benchmark results. That said, what Huawei did is truly misleading and wrong.
